In presenting the chamber’s Small Business Award, Michele Barber noted, that “Although Tonya and Larry Parker are not the original owners of The Denton Depot, they have embraced their ownership, and their relationship with our community, as if they were starting entirely from scratch.”
The Small Business Person of the Year Award has been an annual tradition February membership meeting of the Denton Chamber of Commerce since 1986. The award is a standing process of the chamber’s Small Business Initiatives, headed this year by Kim Pollard, owner of Bookkeeper Girl.
Review and selection included representation from the school of business at both Texas Woman’s University and the University of North Texas, as well as the chamber’s Small Business Development Center.
The Denton Depot is a long-time, well-established enterprise, previously owned by a very active, high-profile individual, Sherrie Day. Sherrie was recognized for this very same award in 1994. For the calendar year ending December 31, 2011. The Denton Depot experienced a 42 percent increase in sales, demonstrating continuous, significant growth the past three years.
Michele went on to say: “They (Tonya and Larry) understand that being a part of a community is more than just selling a product. But, the products they do provide come with exceptional customer service.”
Board Chair-Elect, Chuck Fremaux observed: “Larry and Tonya have embraced their business and their community like few have. They are involved in so many aspects of the community, not the least of which is good old-fashioned bridge-building, networking, and salesmanship. Their can-do attitude with emphasis on customer service, value, and satisfaction sets them apart.”
Like their predecessor, the Parkers definitely understand and embrace the value of relationship-marketing. The benefits from their personal involvement, since day one, in the Denton Chamber, Leadership Denton, the Denton Main Street Association, Denton Festival Foundation, and both universities, have been mutual.
A record 53 nominations were received for the 2011 Small Business of the Year award, mostly through Constant Contact, 33 of which were actually eligible and considered. Nominations were primarily based on an individual’s business-related accomplishments as of December 31, 2011, and included a combination of comparable growth indices, innovation, and the ability to overcome adverse circumstances.
